When you drive a rental car in Dubai, follow the posted speed limits, wear your seatbelt and never drink and drive. Salik tolls and traffic fines from your rental are added to your bill. At Prox Rentals, Salik is charged at the current RTA rate and fines at the actual amount, with no admin fee.
This short guide covers the rules tourists ask about most. It also explains how we handle tolls, fines and accidents on our cars.
Speed Limits and Cameras
Speed limits in Dubai change from road to road. Always read the signs, and drive to the limit shown.
Speed cameras are common across the city. A camera fine goes to the car, so it comes back to you through your rental bill.
Everyday Rules to Follow
- Drive on the right-hand side of the road.
- Everyone in the car should wear a seatbelt.
- Do not hold your phone while driving.
- Dubai has zero tolerance for drinking and driving.
- Stop for people at pedestrian crossings.
- Keep a safe distance and signal before you change lanes.
Rules and fine amounts are set by the authorities and can change. Check the RTA’s official information before your trip if you are unsure.
Salik Road Tolls
Salik is Dubai’s electronic road toll. Gates on some main roads read a tag on the car as you drive through. You do not stop or pay at the gate.
Every rental car has a Salik tag. With Prox Rentals, Salik is charged at the current RTA rate for each crossing, with nothing added. No admin fee.
Traffic Fines
If a fine is issued during your rental, we pass it on as it was charged.
- Traffic fines: billed at actual amount. No markup, no admin fee.
- No black points on your license. The points go to the car.
The simplest way to avoid fines is to drive carefully and watch the signs.
Parking
Many busy areas have paid parking. You can usually pay at a meter or through the official RTA options shown on the signs.
Some malls and residential areas have free parking. Never park in a restricted zone or block another car, as this can lead to a fine or towing.
If You Have an Accident
- Call the police and get a police report.
- Call or WhatsApp us.
- Our public relations officer helps with the police and the paperwork.
All our cars are fully insured. If the police report shows the accident was not your fault, you pay nothing towards it. If it is your fault, you pay an excess based on the car. Our team confirms the excess for your car before you book.
We also offer 24/7 roadside assistance with a replacement car.
Fuel and Return
Our fuel rule is full to full. You receive the car with a full tank and return it full.
Driving to Oman
Driving our cars to Oman is allowed only with prior approval. You need Oman insurance and documents, and we need 2 days’ notice.
Before You Drive
Make sure your documents are ready. Tourists need a passport and a valid driving license. See our FAQs for license questions, and our terms and conditions for the full rental rules.
